Notes on this Genus
All species accepted by CP Kurtzmann & JW Fell, The Yeasts, 4th Ed., Elsevier Science, Amsterdam, 1997, are listed.
Species in this genus

This obsolete species is a synonym of Rhodotorula mucilaginosa
- Sporobolomyces elongatus
- Sporobolomyces falcatus
- Sporobolomyces foliicola
- Sporobolomyces gracilis
- Sporobolomyces grisoflavus
- Sporobolomyces holsaticus
Notes: This species is a bit confusing. The type strain (CBS 1522) is said by Kurtzmann & Fell to be an anamorphic strain of S. johnsonii. But it is also treated by K & F as synonym of S. johnsonii. Finally, K & F observe that most of the strains labeled S. holsaticus that they studied were able to mate with strains of S. salmonicolor.
Sporidiobolus johnsonii is a teleomorph of this species.
